Michigan City Lighthouse

The evening I arrived to shoot the lighthouse in Michigan City it was a chilly day, and even cooler night. I reached Washington Park, where the lighthouse is located, around 8:00pm to see large waves crashing into the lighthouse pier and beach, being pushed by 25 to 30 mph winds. The winds were so strong the fine, white sands blowing over the seawall separating the beach from the parking area resembled a snowstorm.

Disappointed at the conditions, I weighed my two options: scrap it all and come back the next day, when the temperatures were expected to be almost 15 degrees warmer, and the winds calmer, or drive around until just before the sun set and come back to see if the winds might die down enough to at least stop the blowing sand. Seeing the huge cooling tower of the Michigan City Power Company a few blocks from the marina, I thought I’d try something with that in hopes of salvaging a decent sunset shot for the day. I had less than an hour to get a shot … the clock was ticking!

Another great weekend in St Louis for a second year in a row for the Braves vs Cardinals baseball series (Cards swept the Braves in both series!?). The view from the East St Louis, Illinois side of the river (strangely safe) looking west at the city skyline are new for 2011, as are the baseball game photos. A nice city to visit for a few days and a great sports town! Click here for my St Louis photo gallery.
