Columbus, Ohio 2012

Rolling into Columbus, Ohio from the west it was obvious this was going to be a better-than-average opportunity to come away with some colorful after-dark, skyline photos of the sixteenth largest city in the United States. Thanks largely to the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers northwest of the downtown area, Columbus has a lot of photogenic appeal despite it’s relatively small geographic size.

As  the sun set on this warm June evening, I had already been shooting the area for an hour or more. Safety wasn’t an issue during daylight, but as night fell on this predominately deserted area, I started to become more concerned about my surroundings. Not only were there fewer people milling about, but the area on the westside of the river in front of the COSI was not very well lit either. However, it offered the best photo op from directly across the river. And I wanted that shot. So I went on back down to the bank, staying as alert as possible.

Not only was I in a deserted area next to a river, but also right next to a large bridge underpass. I’ll admit t was a bit spooky, and I couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. With the understanding this was not the best situation to be putting myself into, and rather than retreat and regret, I decided to stay and get as many shots in as I could before heading back up the bank … to safety! If anyone did try to cause trouble, I was on my own with no backup.

Memphis 2012

It’s 8:30am and I’m at the Greyhound bus station in Memphis, standing next to the bus I just spent over twelve hours riding on from Indianapolis. I’m cursing myself for being so stupid as to put camera and all my gear into a suitcase, which was now gone. Nowhere in sight.

There was no one left in the luggage area, but there was a lone suitcase similar in color to mine. It became obvious that someone had grabbed my suitcase instead of their own, and I reasoned that if they looked inside and discovered thousands of dollars worth of camera gear, there wasn’t much chance I’d get it back, and this entire trip and ticket purchase would be a waste of time and money.

Another great weekend in St Louis for a second year in a row for the Braves vs Cardinals baseball series (Cards swept the Braves in both series!?). The view from the East St Louis, Illinois side of the river (strangely safe) looking west at the city skyline are new for 2011, as are the baseball game photos. A nice city to visit for a few days and a great sports town! Click here for my St Louis photo gallery.
